Easter- 5 fun food activities for the kids

Easter is fast approaching, which means 1 thing…..The Easter Holidays!!

2 whole weeks to entertain the Kids!!

If the very thought brings shivers down your spine then fear not, Whisk Kids is here to provide you with 5 fun Easter themed food activities, guaranteed to bring the Easter spirit to your household!

 

1. Cornflake Cakes

Cornflake cakes have to be one of the most simple, yet fun activities to do at Easter.

They are a staple in our household and loved by all!

Decorate with mini eggs or fluffy chicks (just remember mini eggs can pose a choking hazard to under 4’s)

Ingredients

  • 100g cornflakes
  • 100g milk chocolate, broken into chunks
  • 50g butter
  • 3tbsp golden syrup
  • approx 24 / 36 mini eggs

Method

  1. Add the butter and golden syrup to a small saucepan and slowly melt together over a gentle heat
  2. Add the chocolate and stir continuously until melted
  3. Once melted take off the heat and set aside
  4. Add cornflakes to a large bowl
  5. Pour chocolate mixture over cornflakes and stir together well
  6. Divide cornflakes between 12 cupcake cases
  7. Top with 2-3 mini eggs and / or a fluffy chick
  8. Leave to set fully then enjoy!

 

2. Traditional Easter Biscuits

I just love these traditional Easter biscuits. Flavoured with mixed spice and sweetened with raisins, they always make me think of Easter.

Make them into circles, bunny shapes or maybe even try the unicorn or dinosaur cutters available to buy in our shop!

Ingredients

  • 225g Self raising flour
  • 115g butter
  • 115g sugar
  • 55g currants
  • 1 egg

Method

  1. Turn oven to 170ºC.
  2. Using fingertips rub butter into the flour.
  3. Next add the sugar and currants.
  4. Add the egg then mix together to form a ball
  5. Roll out onto a floured surface and cut out biscuit shapes
  6. Place on a lined baking tray and bake for approx 12 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Remove from oven and allow too cool
  8. Dust with icing sugar before serving

3. Bunny Bait Popcorn

We absolutely LOVE this chocolate coated popcorn and the best thing about it is its so versatile and really allows your kids to get creative in the kitchen.

As well as munching away on it over a good film, we also bagged some of it up and left it out the night before Easter (along with a carrot) to help lure the Easter Bunny to our house!! My daughter really enjoyed doing that and it made everything seem really magical to her.

Ingredients

  • 100g Popcorn (we used sweet, but you can use plain if preferred)
  • 50g White Chocolate
  • 2tbsp Bashed smarties
  • 2tsp Easter coloured sprinkles

Method

  1. Break up the chocolate into squares and melt over a medium heat in a saucepan (on in 30 sec blasts in the microwave)
  2. Place popcorn into a large bowl
  3. Drizzle melted chocolate over popcorn and add your toppings
  4. Stir together thoroughly ensuring all popcorn is covered
  5. Pour out onto a baking tray and leave to set
  6. Enjoy!!

This recipe is great because you can use so many different toppings to suit your tastes / theme etc

Other ideas for toppings:

  • Mini marshmallows
  • Chopped glace cherries
  • Milk chocolate
  • Bashed up crunchie pieces
  • Mini jelly sweets
  • Bashed up mini eggs
  • Freeze dried strawberries
  • Christmas / Halloween themed sprinkles
    or any other favourites!

 

4. Mini Doughnut Pops

These mini doughnut pops are just soooo cute and look great on the Easter treat table.

Again they are very versatile and can be decorated in many different ways, plus they’re so easy to make!

Ingredients

  • x12 mini ring doughnuts
  • 100g chocolate (milk, white or coloured candy melts)
  • Sprinkles
  • x12 Lollypop sticks

Method

  1. Lay the doughnuts out in a line on a baking tray
  2. Melt the chocolate over a medium heat in a saucepan (or in 30 second blasts in the microwave)
  3. Dip the end of a lollypop stick in the melted chocolate and insert into the bottom of the doughnut
  4. Spoon (or pipe) the chocolate over the top of the doughnut
  5. Add sprinkles
  6. Leave to set for approx 30mins

Yummy!

5. Homemade Chocolate Bars

 

Homemade chocolate bars are such fun to make, and they serve as a great gift to give to others for Easter.

You can purchase your own chocolate bar mould from our shop, here, and make yours look super professional!

All you need to do is:

  1. Melt 100g Chocolate in a pan (or in 30 second blasts in the microwave)
  2. Pour evenly into the mould
  3. Add your extras
  4. Leave to set for approx 2 hrs (or in a fridge for approx 1 hour)
  5. De-mould and “ta-da” your very own chocolate bar!

 

Ideas for chocolate bar extras:

  • Mini marshmallows
  • Sprinkles
  • Chocolate chips
  • Sweets
  • A few drops of flavouring to make flavoured chocolate
  • Fudge pieces
  • Broken up biscuit

World Health Day – Guilt free Apple Cake

Sunday April 7th 2019 is World Health Day

With International Health Awareness Day approaching, I thought id share with you a healthy, sugar free, high fiber apple cake recipe and also share some tips with you on how to make baking recipes healthier.

I have also included a link to some fun kids work-sheets, games and activities based on health and fitness, that you may like to look at with your little ones to help raise awareness of the benefits of being healthy.

Guilt free Apple cake

This delicious apple cake is free from added refined sugars, high in fiber and low in fat, but the best thing is….you’d never know!

Ingredients

  • X2 apples, peeled and sliced
  • 2tsp mixed spice
  • 8tsp powdered natural sweetener (for apples)
  • 3 eggs
  • 500g apple sauce
  • 115g butter,soft
  • 2tsp vanilla extract
  • 80ml apple juice
  • 360g wholemeal flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 50g powdered sweetener (for cake)

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C
  2. In a small bowl, mix together sliced apples, mixed spice and powdered sweetener
  3. In a 2nd bowl mix together the butter, apple sauce, apple juice, eggs and vanilla
  4. In a 3rd bowl add flour, baking powder and powdered sweetener.
  5. Mix together bowls 2 and 3 until well combined
  6. Pour half of the batter into a cake tin
  7. Top with a layer of half of the apples mix
  8. Pour remaining cake batter on top
  9. Finish off by arranging the remaining apple slices on top of the cake
  10. Bake for approx 1.15hr (or until skewer in centre of cake comes out clean)
  11. Remove from oven and allow to cool

Enjoy a guilt free slice of cake!

Ways to make Baking Healthier

We all love a sweet treat, but how can you make a sweet treat better for your health?

Here are some ways you can enjoy a treat without the guilt!

  1. Use wholemeal flour (higher in fiber which is vital for a healthy gut)
  2. Replace refined sugars with natural sugars (honey, maple syrup, agave syrup – these are all naturally very sweet and contain more nutrients that refined white sugar, which has no nutrients at all!)
  3. Add fruit / veg to recipes (carrot cake, courgette cake, beetroot cake, or even our apple cake recipe shared here – all these will increase the fiber and vitamin content of your bakes)
  4. Reduce portion sizes (still have your sweet treat, but cut down on your portion size. Have half today and save the other half for another day. That way you still get to satisfy your sweet tooth, but with half the amount of calories)
  5. Substitute Fats (saturated fats are very bad for our heart health, unsaturated are much better. Replace butters with natural oils where possible. In some recipes you can even use apple sauce in place of part of the butter quantity, such as in our Guilt free Apple Cake recipe.
